Instagram Reels – What is it & Should I Care?πŸŽ₯

Just this week, Instagram dropped the latest version of their App which now includes the much anticipated feature “Reels”.

Many view this as Facebook’s (who owns Instagram) way of competing with the wildly popular TikTok – an app which is a short video platform. And with all the drama going on lately in terms of a potential ban of TikTok in the USA, Facebook is likely hoping to lure TikTok’s content creators over to their own platform.

What is Reels?

You can record and edit 15-second multi-clip videos, and add in audio, effects and other creative touches. 
For the audio, you can search for a song from Instagram’s music library, or use your own original audio by recording a reel with it.

Other features include choosing effects from the built-in effect gallery, and speeding up or slowing down either parts of the video or the audio you’ve selected so you can keep things in sync.

How can your business/brand benefit from Reels?

In one word: Visibility.

People love watching video. And Facebook/Instagram knows this. That’s why a video post or story will always be better rewarded by their algorithm than a static picture.

Video content is rising, and it also allows brands to express their creativity & authenticity in an original way.

People also tend to spend more time on video, which means you have their attention for longer. Again, the algorithm will reward you for this by raising the overall visibility of your other posts.

Now is the time to jump in

Given that Instagram just fully launched Reels this week, they are likely going to be really pushing for accounts to use it.

And the best way for them to do this is to place a higher priority on Reels content.

While I believe that Instagram will always place the highest priority (ie. reward) on Live videos, Reels will be a very close second. In fact during this launch month of August, it wouldn’t surprise me if Reels receives number one priority.

This means that if you start using Reels, you could expand your visibility and grow your audience quickly.

So if you don’t already have video incorporated into your marketing strategy, now is the time to do it.
